With this ring...

Wedding rings are a centerpiece to your wedding plans. Nationally, couples spend $3,253 on average for an engagement ring and $1,197 on wedding rings (his and hers).

Sometimes the groom picks out the wedding ring for his bride without her participation, or he may pop the question, and then the couple goes out together to pick out their rings. However you do it, it is such an important decision because you will be wearing these rings forever!

Traditional metals for wedding rings have been gold and platinum. Some are sterling silver, although this is a soft metal and tends to bend and dent. The new metals are Titanium, Palladium, Rhodium, Black Ceramic, Cobalt Chrome, Vitalium, Tungsten, Stainless Steel, etc. Some of these metals come in black, a very popular choice these days.

You may elect to wear one of these because of how they look, or it may be because you have an allergy to other metals. There are also all kinds of stones other than white diamonds that couples are electing to use: black, chocolate, yellow or blue diamonds, birthstones, white saphires, silver topaz, Swarovski crystals, emeralds, garnets, etc. Stones can be purchased separately – in stores or online, and then set into a ring setting of your choice. Or you can custom design your own rings at many jewelers. Make sure you have a drawing of what the ring you’ve designed will look like, listing the metals and stones (including quality) that will be used.

Your rings are a symbol of your union and should reflect both of your personalities. Take your time selecting your rings so that you can enjoy them for years to come!

Don’t forget your other “wedding jewelry” – the necklace and bracelet that you will wear and the jewelry that you select for your maid of honor and bridesmaids to wear! This jewelry should be selected with care as well so that it is appropriate for the style dress that everyone is wearing. The necklaces should be the correct length depending on the neckline and the choice of metal and stones should compliment the color of the fabric. Some brides select jewelry from stores or online but you can also create a truly personal reflection of your taste by custom designing a piece of jewelry for you and your attendants. This piece will become a keepsake and will be worn with fond memories for many years to come. One company to check out for bridesmaids jewelry is www.dajboutique.com. They will make custom bracelets for you and your wedding party!

Challenges:

  • These new metals tend to be very strong so make sure you get properly fitted before you invest in rings – some cannot be resized.

  • Find a source that you trust – although prices can be very good online, make sure the source is within the continental U.S. or there may be a delay in receiving your order. Order early!

  • Sizes can vary slightly between one manufacturer and another, and between countries. Get properly fitted before ordering and allow enough time to get the ring resized (if it can be resized) after receiving it.

  • Invest in a good electronic jewelry cleaner to keep your jewelry looking like new.
