Sign right here.....with a Signature Drink!

After putting so much attention to selecting the other details of your wedding — from your rings, dress and tuxedos to your aisle runner, flowers and vows — don’t let your “liquid libations” become an afterthought. You can keep the beer and wine flowing, but create a real “just married” statement by serving a “wow” signature cocktail! By using creative names and taking advantage of seasonal flavors, your signature cocktail can be the personal touch you and your spouse have been looking for. It's an element that can be customized from the ground up.

You can search on the internet for drinks that catch your attention, or you can get ideas from bartenders. Some make their own signature drinks and can recommend what flavors taste good together. You can also select an already established cocktail and change one element of it – add crystalized sugar or syrup instead of regular sugar. Add a spice, like cinnamon, to give it a new flavor.

Selecting a name for your drink should be personal – think of a good memory or inside joke. It can make for good conversation and allow your guests to share these memories.

Presentation also matters – so select glass wear that heightens the experience. Make sure your caterer or venue carries the glasses you need or you may have to buy them yourself. If you do this, you can provide “take home” bags for your guests to keep the glasses as a wedding souvenir!

The drink and glass needs decorations so carefully match the theme, taste and colors of the drink with the appropriate drink decoration. A simple way to customize your cocktail is with a garnish. Skewer fruit, add fruit peals, leaves, herbs, etc. to add visual interest. You can also purchase drink decorations at liquor stores, Michaels (www.michaels.com) , Hobby Lobby (www.hobbylobby.com) , etc. to match your theme.

Challenges:

  • Find a cocktail that you both would enjoy drinking. If one of you don’t drink alcohol, make sure your selection tastes good “virgin” without alcohol and offer both to your guests.

  • Select elements that fall within your budget. You’ll be making large quantities for your guests so don’t choose the most expensive brandy or rum as an ingredient.

  • Carry your theme or colors through to this detail as well and select garnishes and decorations that match.
