Clothing, Hair & Make-Up for Summer Weddings

Summer weddings are traditional and can be very beautiful when moved outdoors. Beaches, farms, parks, etc. all make a beautiful background for a wedding. But with summer weddings come heat and humidity......something that most brides cringe at! Summer rain storms are also a possibility.

Your clothing can keep you cooler or make you hotter at your outdoor wedding. Keep the temperature in mind when choosing your clothing because some dresses are hotter than others (beading, extra linings and layers can cause you to heat up faster). Your groom may elect to have no vests or ties for himself and his groomsmen to keep cool, giving the wedding a more casual feel. The "feel" of what you are both wearing should match - super dressy, dressy or casual - so make sure you're both on the same page.

Look for hairstyles that won't fall or frizz in the heat and humidity. Buns, braids, twists, etc. keep hair under control and looking beautiful all day. Have plenty of hair spray, gel, mousse and hair pins to limit movement. A few soft wisps of hair surrounding your face looks soft and romantic and won't go astray when the humidity hits. If you color or chemically straighten or curl, do this days before the wedding in case of an unexpected allergic reaction.

Consider a lighter make-up than you usually use if your wedding is outside. Some make-up is waterproof and will stand up to perspiration and humidity. You don't want to look oily while you're exchanging your vows so treat your skin before make-up application with a product that absorbs oil if you skin is oily. Keep your make-up bag close by to duck into the bathroom for touch-ups throughout the day.

Other Tips: Have your photographer take your posed portraits in a shady spot so that you and your wedding party are not sweating any more than necessary. Don't have guests sitting in direct sunlight for extended periods of time. Have plenty of cold water available before, during and after the ceremony to keep your guest hydrated. Consider having fans (which can double as programs!) to keep your guests cool. Water and wind can be noisy and make it hard for guests to hear your vows (especially at the beach) and for the videographer to get clear audio during the ceremony. Keep the ceremony short and sweet so that your guests are not straining to hear every word for an extended period of time.
